The square root is defined only for non-negative numbers. In other words, you can compute [tex] \sqrt{x} [/tex] if and only if [tex] x \geq 0 [/tex]

If [tex] x \geq 0 [/tex], the square root is a real number, and so is [tex] \sqrt{x}-4 [/tex]
