Cosmic Gravitational Wave Discovery: Why is the observation of gravitational waves such a big deal (Feb 2016)?

It is a big deal because it will help us understand what is happening in the universe. It will let us know what kind of cosmological body is/are  involved in producing such waves. And it will help us estimate the merging of two bodies every 15 minutes the emission of gravitational waves from the source.
